If you’ve taken a pregnancy test and it came back positive, you now have fairly reliable confirmation of the pregnancy—but the test result doesn’t give you the whole picture. Whether you’re planning to have an abortion or are still exploring your options, an ultrasound can provide critical information that a pregnancy test simply can’t.
At Albemarle Pregnancy Resource Center and Clinic (APRCC), we offer free and confidential limited obstetrical ultrasounds to confirm key details about your pregnancy. If you’re considering abortion, this scan is a necessary step to safeguard your health and help you make an informed decision.

Here’s what an ultrasound reveals that a pregnancy test does not:
1. Whether the Pregnancy Is Viable
A pregnancy test only detects the hormone hCG, which your body produces during pregnancy. However, this hormone can still be present even if the pregnancy is not developing normally or has already ended.
An ultrasound confirms whether your pregnancy is viable—that is, progressing normally. Since a significant number of pregnancies end in miscarriage (up to 26%), this is critical information to have before moving forward with any decision.
2. How Far Along You Are
Knowing your gestational age matters. Abortion procedures and drugs are only available at certain stages of pregnancy. For example, the abortion drug is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation. If you’re further along, different procedures may be required.
Ultrasound accurately measures how far along you are, which allows you to understand what abortion methods may apply and what risks to be aware of. A pregnancy test cannot provide this information.
3. Where the Pregnancy Is Located
A pregnancy should develop inside the uterus. In rare cases, it implants outside the uterus—often in a fallopian tube. When this happens, it is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it’s a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.
An abortion will not resolve an ectopic pregnancy since it is not located in the uterus, and if it goes undetected, it can lead to life-threatening complications. Ultrasound is the only way to confirm the pregnancy’s location and ensure you receive the proper care if needed.
