What “Viability” Means in Early Pregnancy

In early pregnancy, viability refers to whether the embryo or fetus is developing in a way that suggests the pregnancy is likely to continue. An ultrasound evaluates several key markers that help clinicians determine viability, including the presence of a gestational sac, a fetal pole, and most importantly, a fetal heartbeat. These markers are typically detectable by ultrasound around 6–7 weeks of gestation.

The detection of a heartbeat is a significant indicator of pregnancy progression. Studies show that once cardiac activity is identified in early pregnancy, the likelihood of continuation through the first trimester increases substantially, although no outcome can ever be guaranteed. 

Why Ultrasound Matters for Viability

An ultrasound does more than confirm that a pregnancy exists. It provides insight into whether it is developing normally or requires follow-up care. For example:

• The presence of an embryonic heartbeat greatly reduces the likelihood of early pregnancy loss compared with pregnancies where cardiac activity is not detected
• If a gestational sac is visible without a fetal heartbeat at an expected size, repeat imaging may be recommended to determine whether development is delayed or has stopped
• Ultrasound can identify ectopic pregnancy, which occurs in approximately 1–2% of pregnancies and requires immediate medical attention
