Get Your Own Information First

It can help to walk into that conversation with your parents already knowing the basics: whether you’re actually pregnant, and how far along you are. A limited obstetric ultrasound can confirm both. (Sometimes a home pregnancy test indicates pregnancy even though there has been a pregnancy loss, for example, so you’ll want to be sure.) A confirmed result gives you solid ground to stand on instead of guesses, and it means your parents’ first questions won’t catch you off guard. 

Pick the Right Moment

Timing matters more than people expect. Avoid bringing it up on the way out the door or in the middle of an argument about something else. Look for a quiet stretch when everyone has time to sit down and actually talk, not just react. 

Keep It Simple

You don’t need a speech. Something direct works better than something rehearsed: “I need to tell you something hard. I’m pregnant.” Your parents will likely have a lot of questions right away, some of which may feel pointed. Most of that comes from shock and concern, not anger, even when it doesn’t sound that way at first. Give them a minute to catch up before expecting a calm response.
