What are the warning signs of infection after abortion?

Abortion is a medical procedure, and like any procedure, it comes with risks, including infection. If bacteria enter the uterus during or after the abortion, or if tissue remains inside the body, infection can occur. Knowing the warning signs early is important for protecting your health and avoiding serious complications.

At APRCC, we offer free pregnancy testing, limited obstetric ultrasound, STI testing, and information for those exploring their pregnancy options. Contact us to see how we can support you.

Understanding Abortion Procedures and Risks

Abortion procedures typically fall into two categories: medical (abortion pill) and surgical. Both create significant changes in your body, so being aware of the potential risks is essential.

A medical abortion uses two drugs: mifepristone, which stops the pregnancy from progressing by blocking progesterone, and misoprostol, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

A surgical abortion involves removing the pregnancy through suction or surgical tools, depending on how far along the pregnancy is.

While cramping and bleeding occur after both types, infections can develop if bacteria are introduced or if any pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus.

Signs of Infection After an Abortion

If you’ve had a medical abortion, signs to look out for are:

  • Heavy bleeding (soaking two or more pads per hour for two hours in a row)
  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Fever lasting more than four hours or starting in the days after taking misoprostol
  • Chills, body aches, or rapid heartbeat
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

After a surgical abortion, warning signs include:

  • Excessive bleeding (changing pads every hour)
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness that doesn’t improve
  • Cramps lasting more than 48 hours
  • Increasing pain instead of relief
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

Infections can sometimes result from an incomplete abortion, when tissue remains in the uterus. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical care right away.
